Various Bits of Technical Info That I Keep in Case I Forget

Have you ever spent hours fixing some obscure configuration problem on your Linux/BSD/Whatever box, only to have the same problem six months later... when you've forgotten what you did to fix it, and you have to do the whole process all over again?

Well, this page is where I'm sticking all those little tidbits so I don't have to suffer the pain all over again. I'm putting it on the website and not in some paper journal so that Googlers can benefit from it too.

Can't mount /dev/sda1 for USB storage device-type access to an Olympus E-10 digital camera on Slackware 8.0

Re-compiled the kernel so that all usb stuff was in modules. Then loaded the needed modules in this order: first usb-storage, then usb-uhci. Then mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera worked just fine.

Kernel re-compiling fails during 'make dep' with the following error message:

make[4]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.18/drivers/ide' .depend:558: *** unterminated call to function `wildcard': missing `)'. Stop. make[4]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.18/drivers/ide' make[3]: *** [_sfdep_ide] Error 2 make[3]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.18/drivers' make[2]: *** [fastdep] Error 2 make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.18/drivers' make[1]: *** [_sfdep_drivers] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.18' make: *** [dep-files] Error 2

Started over from a fresh un-tarballing of the source. Also, this may be of note:

Sometimes when you've interrupted the compilation of a new kernel (for whatever reason) it's impossible to restart the 'make' process. Even make clean won't work. You can solve this (at least...it worked for me) by removing the file /usr/src/linux/.hdepend
